Android 13 on the reMarkable Paper Pro.
A community port of Android 13 for the Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move. It is free, open source, and will be available to everyone once the first testers have run it. This page is for that first round: 30 people who are comfortable with experimental software on their own tablet.
Experimental. This is early, unofficial software. Despite backups and safeguards, it can leave your tablet unbootable or damage it. Only sign up if you accept that risk.

Risks and safeguards
What the installer does, and what can still go wrong.
The installer stops unless device, firmware, slot state, backups and hashes match exactly. That reduces the risk. It does not remove it: this is experimental software running on hardware it was never designed for, and a bad install, a power loss or a bug I have not found yet can leave the tablet unbootable or damaged.

Read-only preflight
Checks the exact device identity, stock 3.28.0.172 firmware, kernel and display ABI, battery, storage and a clean A/B state. Nothing is written.

Two complete stock backups
Both stock root images are streamed off the device twice, size-checked and hashed. A one-slot or mismatched backup is rejected.

Inactive slot only
The only system write is an exact-size image to the unmounted inactive root. Boot areas, partition table, active stock root and your encrypted user data are never touched.

Read back and verify
The written image is read back in full and hashed again immediately before Android is selected as the boot target.

Vendor fallback and restore
If Android fails to boot, the tablet's own A/B fallback should return to stock. Restore and uninstall put everything back from your backups. "Should" is the honest word: none of this has been tried on more than a handful of devices yet.

Fill in the form below. Slots are first come, first served, 15 per device. Once a pool is full its option closes. Nobody is on a waiting list; the port will be public for everyone after this round.
Check your inbox
You get an automatic reply within a few minutes with the installer download link and a short guide. Check spam if it does not show up.
Install and report
Read the guide, then run the installer from Windows, macOS or Linux with the tablet on USB. Afterwards, tell me what worked, what broke and what you would change.

You need a Paper Pro or Paper Pro Move on stock firmware 3.28.0.172, a USB-C cable and a computer. There is nothing to pay and nothing to buy, now or later. I am asking for honest feedback, that is all.

Questions
Before you sign up.
Which devices and firmware are supported?
Only the reMarkable Paper Pro and the Paper Pro Move, both on stock firmware 3.28.0.172. The installer verifies the exact kernel and display library, so no other device or firmware version can be installed on by accident. The reMarkable 1 and 2 are not supported.
Can this damage my tablet?
Yes. Android is written only to the inactive A/B slot and your active stock system and encrypted user data are never written to, but this is experimental software on hardware it was never made for. A bug, a power loss mid-install or something I have not thought of can leave the tablet unbootable, and it is possible that you cannot recover it yourself. Back up your notebooks to the reMarkable cloud or your computer first, and do not use a tablet you cannot afford to lose.
Will I lose my notebooks or my reMarkable OS?
Not by design. The installer makes two complete backups of both slots before anything changes and can restore or uninstall from them. But see the previous answer: there is no guarantee, so keep your own backup as well.
Can I switch between Android and reMarkable OS?
Yes. Android becomes the normal boot target after a healthy install, and a reboot into stock is one tap away from inside Android. The stock slot stays the vendor boot-failure fallback.
What do I need?
A supported tablet on 3.28.0.172 with a good battery level, a USB-C cable, and a Windows, macOS or Linux computer. The installer talks to the tablet over USB. Automatic stock updates are paused while Android occupies the other slot.
Does it cost anything? Is there a paid version?
No, and no. This is a community project. The port is free software under GPL-3.0, the source is public, and it will stay that way. There is nothing to buy and nothing being sold.
Why only 30 people?
So that I can actually read every report and fix things between rounds. After this round the port and installer will be published for everyone; you do not need a slot to use it later.
What is expected from testers?
Install it, use it for a while, and tell me what worked, what did not and anything that surprised you. Bug reports with the built-in diagnostics help the most. There is no fixed time commitment.
Is this affiliated with reMarkable?
No. This is an independent, unofficial community project. reMarkable, Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move are trademarks of reMarkable AS. Installing third-party software will most likely void your warranty, and reMarkable support will not help with a tablet that has it installed.
